We’ll look back and laugh.

And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”Then he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true.” He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. Revelation 21:3-7.

That’s my favorite passage in the entire Bible; we will indeed look back at the petty grievances, ideological feces fights and awkwardly irrational theories of victimization currently polluting the emotional airwaves, and laugh, or whatever immortal spirits do in lieu of ululating vocal cords. As I demonstrated in the previous post, when the insanity reaches a fever pitch that no amount of judicious dialogue can cool down, you have to laugh, or even quote Revelation 21:3-7. If that doesn’t pave a common ground, it’s on to the next verse, Revelation 21:8. “But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death.” If not the carrot, then the stick, but carrot first. I prefer a common ground, if possible.

Why does it often seem impossible? I want to propose a conspiracy theory: There is a secret society of arcane academics who live to propound, promulgate and profit from the most daffy, depraved, delirious and delusional theories of human grievance mongering, like that Robin DiAngelo in my last post, the “scholar of whiteness studies”, gag me with a soup ladle. I can certainly understand the profit motive, and desire for fame, clicks, tweets and retweets, on the part of these “experts” (ex=has been; spurt=drip under pressure), and how eagerly grievance hustlers grab their theories and wallow in them, but what motivates college faculty and administrators who get spat and shat upon by the theorists and their minions, to grovel before and embrace these wacky unhinged ideas? I believe the theorists, the grievance hustlers and the majority of both the faculty and administrators are all members in good standing of S.A.P.P., the Secret Army of Profitable Pandering. The theorists are the generals, the college profs and administrators are the frontline officers, the grievance hustlers are the shock troops, the students are the cannon fodder and the media and the politicians are the propagandists, all these elements conspiring to rake in corporate and tax dollars in a conspiracy of profitable pandering.

We can easily see who’s pandering, and what they are pandering to—the grievance store. Grievances big and small, present or historical, real or imagined. The only criteria for inventory at the grievance store is the ability to monetize it. The theorists profit from book and article publishing, speaking and consulting fees, (dis)honorariums, and of course, fawning accolades from less erudite colleagues over their virtue-signaling opaque ideas. The grievance hustlers and college profs profit all the same ways as the theorists, though they are not above direct extortion nor do they typically turn down offers of corporate board seats from companies that profit from advertising their own virtue. The college administrators get to keep their jobs, and like football coaches, can burnish their reputations and negotiate more profitable sinecures, though unlike the coaches who burnish their reps by winning, these administrators burnish theirs by accommodating whining. The complicit students get to feel all self righteous and might get laid more often, but looking at most of them, I think not. The media and the politicians profit by popularity, advertising dollars from craven corporations and, they hope, votes.

As for the rest of us, the best we can hope for is to eventually take our place as a marginalized group. Until then, reason, logic and forgiveness will continue to be SAPPed away.
