I’ve had it so good in this world, you know. The odds were fifty-to-one against me being born in the United States in 1930. I won the lottery the day I emerged from the womb by being in the United States instead of in some other country where my chances would have been way different. Imagine there are two identical twins in the womb, both equally bright and energetic. And the genie says to them, ‘One of you is going to be born in the United States, and one of you is going to be born in Bangladesh. And if you wind up in Bangladesh, you will pay no taxes. What percentage of your income would you bid to be the one that is born in the United States?’ It says something about the fact that society has something to do with your fate and not just your innate qualities. The people who say, ‘I did it all myself,’ and think of themselves as Horatio Alger — believe me, they’d bid more to be in the United States than in Bangladesh. That’s the Ovarian Lottery. — Warren Buffett, “The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life”
Is it all a lottery? Just dumb luck, random chance where we ended up? Isn’t that belief the foundation of nihilism? Perhaps Warren Buffet–the “Sage of Omaha” (or is it OMG?) should stick to investing, because his worldview is pretty hopeless. Consider Israel. Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy, the first five books of the Old Testament tell of the nation of God’s people: how they gained God’s favor, were enslaved, redeemed, wandered in the wilderness for 40+ years, sinned, repented (sort of), sinned again, then again, and eventually reached the land promised to them by God. On the way they “forgot” God’s mercy to them: the plagues visited on Egypt to free them from slavery; parting of the Red Sea so they could escape the pursuing Egyptian army, which was then drowned by the sea; miraculous food from the sky (manna); enough water for over a million people plus their livestock…..from a rock; being guided and protected in the desert with a pillar of cloud during the day and a pillar of fire at night; God directly destroying their enemies with fire. every time a miracle was taken for granted, they adopted Buffet’s philosophy and worshiped a false god. Golden calf anyone?
What does God’s word say? “Remember the days of old; consider the years of many generations; ask your father, and he will show you, your elders, and they will tell you. When the Most High gave to the nations their inheritance, when he divided mankind, he fixed the borders of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.” Deuteronomy 32:7-8.
If you believe it’s all a lottery, and no loving God has placed you in your circumstances……what is your reason for living? What about people whose circumstances are dire through no apparent fault of their own, like refugees from wars all over the world throughout history, or the victims of the collectivisms? Even the worst political hellholes today–Syria, Venezuela, North Korea, Iran–were at one time in history peaceful and plenteous. But your nation becomes what you worship. Will ours also be sacrificed to the golden calves of egalitarianism, diversity, inclusion, aberrant sexual gratification and self glorification? If so, future Warren Buffets will lament their ovarian lottery.
